The gardens were named after Alfred Boerner. The gardens include John & Hildegarde Voight Trial Garden, Herb Garden, Annual Garden, Rock Garden, Bog Walk, Perennial Garden, and Daylily Garden.

The gardens are maintained by horticulturalists and are part of the Milwaukee County Park System. Visitors will find the Boerner Botanical Gardens closed in the winters; the gardens are open only from late April to early November.
The botanical gardens are spread over a sprawling area of 50 acres. Different species of plant life are displayed and cultivated in the gardens. There are also display and test gardens for All-America Selections and an American Host Society Display Garden.
