The garden derives its name from Alfred Boerner who is credited for designing the original five formal gardens. Other main parks such as the Annual, Rock, Perennial, Peony and Rose Gardens were added in the 1930s. A few more gardens that visitors can see today like the herb, trial, shrub, lily and rose gardens, as well as the Bog Walk were added more recently.
The Boerner Botanical Gardens are maintained by professional horticulturalists and come under the administration of the Milwaukee County Park System. A Disneyaland for a nature lover, these gardens also include test and display gardens for All-America Selections. These gardens close for winters and remain open for public visits from late April to early November.
You can take a docent-guided tour of the Boerner Botanical Gardens that covers more than forty acres of land. During your tour, you can see various professionally labeled and evaluated plant collections. The crab apple collections displayed here is one of the largest in Wisconsin. You can also see more than 500 varieties of roses in these gardens.
The wheelchair accessible paths in the gardens are helpful for elderly and disabled visitors. Those who are a part of the guided garden tour group can avail a discount of 10% on their gift shop purchases.
