The garden derives its name from Alfred Boerner who is credited for designing the original five formal gardens. Other main parks such as the Annual, Rock, Perennial, Peony and Rose Gardens were added in the 1930s. A few more gardens that visitors can see today like the herb, trial, shrub, lily and rose gardens, as well as the Bog Walk were added more recently.

The Boerner Botanical Gardens are maintained by professional horticulturalists and come under the administration of the Milwaukee County Park System. These gardens close for winters and remain open for public visits from late April to early November.
