General Mitchell International Airport Parking Information

The General Mitchell International Airport, often referred to as MKE, is a public airport owned and operated by Milwaukee County. Established in 1920, the MKE is named after Billy Mitchell - a United States Army Air Service General.

The MKE is a well-maintained airport which offers you a large selection for shopping and dining when you wait for a flight to arrive. There are abundant books and magazines for you to kill time and lots of wonderful places for you to grab a bite. Plenty of comfortable seats and free Wi-Fi access might also be reasons for you to feel relaxing before you get to your gate.

Most visitors that have ever been to the MKE also speak highly of its efficient security. Plus, the General Mitchell International Airport takes credit for its friendly and professional staff as well as the clean environment. It's very easy to navigate. Therefore, passengers can get in or out of the airport without any hassle.

It is located only several miles away from the Center Business District of Milwaukee. As a result, it's very convenient for visitors to get there. In this area, bus, shuttle and railway services are available almost all the time.

If you prefer to drive to the MKE, just allow yourself enough time on the road since you might come across heavy traffic during rush hours. As for parking, there is nothing you need to worry about. The MKE operates a huge parking garage which has been divided into two sections.

For passenger's convenience, the Airport Parking Garage is linked to the terminal by skywalks. It offers 6 parking levels. And vehicles that are taller than 7′0″ are not permitted to get into the garage. Besides, both aisles A and B are unavailable for vehicles taller than 6′2″.

As you can see from the map, the Airport Parking Garage is divided into Daily Section and Hourly Section. The Hourly section is most suitable for parker who needs to leave his vehicle in the garage for 5 hours or less. However, short term parking is only available on the 3rd and 4th floor of the garage.

Things would be much easy if you plan to park for longer than five hours, because all floors of the garage are open for daily parking. Overnight parking is also allowed in Daily Parking Section.

Stay for less than 30 minutes in Hourly Parking Section is free of charge. And the second half an hour would cost you 2 dollars. After that, parking rate is two dollars per hour. The maximum daily parking fee of the Hourly Parking Section is 22 dollars.

Parking in Daily Parking Section will also be charged 2 dollars per hour. But, the maximum daily parking rate of this section is much cheaper. Normally, you only need to pay 12 dollars for parking in Daily Section for a whole day.

Surface parking lot is also offered by the General Mitchell International Airport. it's situated on the south of the parking garage and within a short walk from the terminal. You can find the entrance of the surface parking lot next to the Baggage Claim.

Just like the Hourly Parking Section, surface parking lot is free for parking within 30 minutes. And its parking rate is 2 dollars per hour as well. The maximum daily charge is 13 dollars per car.

If you're looking for inexpensive parking options, the SuperSaver Lot would be surely your best choice. Though its parking rate is also 2 dollars per hour, its maximum daily charge is only 5 dollars per vehicle.

Compared to parking garage and lot provided by the MKE, the SuperSaver Lot is kind of far away from the Airport. However the distance is compensated by free shuttle buses which are scheduled to transport to and from the Airport every 10 minutes. Free shuttle service is available 24 hours every day.

Driving visitors can get to the SuperSaver Lot through Howell Avenue or Airport Spur with ease. Just follow the signs located on both sides of the road.

Handicapped parking spaces are obtained in both the Airport Parking Garage and surface parking lot. Disabled parkers can get to the terminal from the Airport Parking Garage via a skywalk which comes with a enclosed moving walkway. Air condition is offered in the moving walkway.

Disabled-designated parking spaces of the surface parking lot are placed along the first aisle. There isn't any shuttle commuting between the surface parking lot and the terminal since they are very close to each other.

If you opt to park in the SuperSaver Lot, then remember that handicapped parking spaces are only available in Lot A. The disabled-designated parking area is in close proximity to Shelter 2 and Area D.

30 spaces are provided for people waiting for family members or friends to arrive. The Cell Phone Waiting Area is designated within the surface parking lot. And visitors who need to pick up passengers could enjoy free parking for about 30 minutes in this area.

Milwaukee International Airport or Local Airport? Pros and Cons of Different Types of Airports

An airport is not just a place where planes take off and land. There are so many different kinds of airports, and in places with more than one airport, sometimes the choice of airport is just as important as the choice of airline or carrier.

Genera Mitchell International Airport is the primary airport in Milwaukee, and is also referred to as "Chicago's third airport" because of its use by travelers to and from Chicago instead of using Chicago's O'hare and Midway Airports. Mitchell Airport is also a hub for Frontier Airlines and AirTran Airways.

Large international transit hubs carry more traffic and offer flights to more destinations. These airports cater not only to the local populace and to travelers heading to that place and the nearby area, but also to transit passengers who are merely passing through en route to other places. A transit hub may offer more destination choices, but it would also be busier compared to a local airport.

A smaller airport would have fewer flight options but would also mean less stress to the harried traveler. It would not be as crowded or as chaotic as a larger airport. A larger airport would also have more facilities available. However, a delay or a problem in a large airport would cause a ripple effect, affecting more flights and inconveniencing more passengers and crew.

Larger airports, though, might offer more flexibility especially if more flights are available. A small airport with few flights might leave a transit passenger waiting a long time for the next flight.
