Pabst Theater

A good Milwaukee travel guide will have a mention of The Pabst Theater which is colloquially known as "the Pabst". Some call it "Milwaukee's Jewel Box". It is an indoor concert venue hosting over 100 events every year.

The theater has presented greats such as actor Laurence Olivier, ballerina Anna Pavlova and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff. It has the distinction of being the fourth oldest theater in the US and is sometimes referred to as the "Grand Old Lady". In 1991, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark and has been officially known as a State of Wisconsin Historical Site.

The theater was built in 1895 and was designed by Otto Strack. He based the design on European Opera Houses and the German Renaissance Revival style. One of the main features was that the theater was not just opulent, but fire-proof too.

Otto Strack made use of numerous technological innovations. He used a primary air-conditioning system using large amounts of ice and fans. He made use of all-electric illumination and the first fire-curtains to be ever used in the country. The theater also had an innovation in the form of an electric organ. A counterweight system is used for hoisting scenery. It was installed after World War I, and still remains in use.

Because of its long history and architectural opulence, it becomes a feature on one's travel list. The auditorium is decorated in maroons and reds with silver and gold accents. It is designed in the shape of a drum.

The auditorium has a huge, 2 ton Austrian Crystal Chandeleir hanging over it. The staircase is made of white Italian Carrara marble. An arch made of poroscenium highlighted by gold leaf, frames the stage. All Milwaukee travel deals normally include a visit to the Pabst Theater.
